THE TRAVEL DOCTOR advises travelers to schedule appointments far in advance of their departure. Most vaccines require several weeks to provide protection. In addition early appointments allow our medical staff time to determine reactions to preventive medicines and, if necessary, to prescribe alternatives. Pre-trip screenings are of great benefit to people with chronic diseases and to those who may be sensitive to medication, such as children and pregnant women. In general we advise patients to visit us six weeks or more before their departure dates.
We often get telephone calls from people who ask us "I'm visiting (their destination) - what vaccinations do I need?"
That's a question no one can answer over the phone. Travelers need to visit with us so we can determine specifics like where in the country you will visit, how long your stay will be, and what you will be doing while there. All of these things as well as your current state of health contribute to how you must prepare for your travel.
